The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the John Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.<\/p>\n

All these are deaths per year:<\/p>\n

12,000 \u2013 unnecessary surgery
\n7,000 \u2013 medication errors in hospitals
\n20,000 \u2013 other errors in hospitals
\n80,000 \u2013 infections in hospitals
\n106,000 \u2013 non-error, negative effects of drugs
\nThese total to 225,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!<\/p>\n

What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician\u2019s activity, manner or therapy. It is used especially to describe a complication of treatment.<\/p>\n

225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these figures and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease).<\/p>\n

The author references another analyses which concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with:<\/p>\n

116 million extra physician visits
\n77 million extra prescriptions
\n17 million emergency department visits
\n8 million hospitalizations
\n3 million long-term admissions
\n199,000 additional deaths
\n$77 billion in extra costs<\/p>\n
